Retirement security continues to be a top focus of the Academy, and Social Security solvency is a critical part of that discussion. The Retirement Practice Council hosted a webinar Monday examining the 2026 Social Security Trustees Report, released last week. Presenters included Social Security Administration (SSA) Chief Actuary Karen Glenn; Daniel Nickerson, head of trust fund operations and proposal estimates in SSA’s actuarial services division; and Jason Schultz, SSA’s head of actuarial operations. Academy Social Security Committee Chairperson Sam Gutterman moderated. Watch a replay on Academy Learning. The annual Social Security and Medicare trustees’ reports were summarized in last week’s Academy alert (member login required), and additional analysis will be forthcoming from both the Social Security Committee and the Medicare Committee.

Next Week—Industry-University Cooperative Webinar Series Kicks Off Part one of the Academy’s industry-university webinar series kicks off next week, highlighting the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers, made up of academic researchers who work with an industry-led advisory board to evaluate research projects. Presenters will include NSF and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials and academic leaders who are focused on the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center. The webinar will be held on June 22; part two will follow next month. Register today. Academy President Tricia Matson, President-Elect Frank Todisco, and Executive Director Bill Michalisin attended the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) annual meeting in Calgary, engaging with the CIA’s leadership, members, and stakeholders. The June 15–16 meeting included an AI workshop, property/casualty streams, speakers from all practice areas, and a celebration of CIA members who have achieved their FCIA.

Recently Released—Academy Insights Stakeholder Newsletter The latest issue of Academy Insights, the Academy’s quarterly newsletter for nonmember stakeholders, highlights Contingencies recent “Seven Ways Actuaries Shape Your Life” web exclusive; the Health Practice Council’s testimony before the Texas House; a preview of September’s retirement symposium; and an Actuary Voices episode on the rising cost of auto insurance. Be sure to leverage the newsletter to share with your non-actuarial stakeholders and help spread the word on the Academy’s ongoing efforts as the voice on professionalism and public policy in the U.S. New Joint LTC Combo Committee Seeking Volunteers The Academy’s new Joint Long-Term Care Combo Committee is seeking members with experience in long-term care from both the life and the health perspectives. This joint Health Practice Council and Life Practice Council committee is charged with monitoring, responding to, and educating about the various aspects of products that combine features of life insurance policies or annuity contracts with long-term care coverage. Professionalism Outreach Covers AI, ASOPs Academy volunteers presented on professionalism at two events: ▶ AI, Data Science, and Analytics Committee (ADAC) Co-Chairperson Yukki Yeung and Committee on Professional Responsibility (COPR) member Melissa Zrelack kicked off the summer Southeastern Actuaries Conference meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Wednesday, presenting a three-hour “Unpacking the Promise of AI With Professionalism” session. They looked at bias issues raised by AI and algorithms and walked through insights and critical approaches for actuaries covered in the COPR discussion paper Actuarial Professionalism Considerations for Generative AI. Attendees participated in several interactive case study discussions. ▶ Immediate Past President Darrell Knapp presented “A Practical Guide to Reading ASOPs” to KPMG in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday. Knapp suggested reading actuarial standards of practice (ASOPs) with an intentional eye toward their structure; key concepts such as professional judgment, materiality, reasonableness, and conflict or gap decision-making; and differences that exist among ASOPs in areas like scope and the definitions of terms. Academy in the News - San Francisco’s KGO-AM radio noted that “although the Social Security system is not in imminent danger, most people agree that the earlier reforms are instituted, the less painful they will be for everyone,” and pointed listeners to the Academy’s website for information on reform options.

Abacus Actuaries Invites Actuaries to Its Mentorship Program | | |

Abacus Actuaries, one of the affinity groups the Academy sponsors, invites Academy members to be candidates to join its 2026 mentorship program, connecting actuarial professionals across industries by signing up as mentors, mentees, or both. The program is open to candidates and credentialed actuaries working full-time, as well as retired actuaries from all backgrounds. Students and career-changers should keep an eye out for more information on the group’s student mentorship program, coming later this summer. The deadline is Friday, June 26.
