ABOUT THIS WEBINAR
Join the American Academy of Actuaries for the second in a two-part webinar series highlighting the National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers (IUCRCs). IUCRCs consist of academic researchers at two or more universities who work with an industry-led advisory board to determine which projects would be most useful. In this webinar, you will learn about the research agendas of two of the IUCRCs sponsored by both the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Learn about the research designed to provide tools and techniques to improve the ability of the insurance industry to manage climate risk. In the Q&A, engage directly with experts driving these advances.
The focus of this webinar will be on the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Convective Storms (CIRCS), a partnership between Northern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin – Madison and on the Center for Innovation in Risk, Catastrophes, and Decisions (CIRCAD), which joins experts at the University of Georgia and Duke University.
CIRCS’ work reflects the multifaceted nature of convective storm hazards and the need for integrated research that spans basic science, emerging technologies, and decision-making applications.
CIRCS has six core research thrusts: Societal impacts; Prediction; Variability and change; Data science; Modeling; and Risk. CIRCAD is an interdisciplinary, solution-oriented research center dedicated to addressing the escalating financial and societal consequences of natural hazards, extreme events, and systemic disruptions.
CIRCAD has four principal focal points for their research: Innovative Insurance Mechanisms; Improved Risk Modeling and Transparency; Accessible Climate and Exposure Data; and Systemic Risk and Decision Analysis.
During the webinar, attendees will:
- Hear about the specific projects underway this year at the two Centers;
- Ask questions about these or other potential projects;
- Learn how to remain informed on the on-going work; and
- Learn how to join the industry advisory boards to help shape future research.
