Academy Announces VP Nominees, Hires Staff Actuaries | | |

In case you missed it, the July Actuarial Update introduces the Academy’s incoming vice president nominees—William Hines, professionalism and education; Kevin Dyke, casualty; and Susan Pantely, health. Andy Ferris was also nominated to be secretary-treasurer. They will take their positions following the Academy’s mid-December Leadership Transition event. Also, the Academy hired two senior actuaries—Julia Lerche, health; and Seong-min Eom, life and risk management, to deepen member and stakeholder value and benefit the Academy’s public policy and professionalism work. ASB, ABCD Seeking Pension, Life Members The Academy is seeking members interested in serving as volunteers on the Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) and the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) for three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Nominations are due by Aug. 15. ▶ ASB—The ASB is seeking an experienced pension volunteer with a keen ability to consider and understand issues in areas outside of the individual’s practice area. Those interested should review the ASB selection criteria and send your name and contact information to [email protected]. ▶ ABCD—The ABCD is seeking two experienced life volunteers with a deep understanding of the Code of Professional Conduct and the ability to think through complex ethical issues. Academy Presenting at IABA, NAIC, OLA Meetings | | |

The Academy will present at several stakeholder events this week and next. ▶ IABA—Staff and volunteers are presenting at the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) annual meeting, being held Thursday through Sunday in Charlotte, N.C. Academy Senior Health Actuary Julia Lerche will present in a Saturday morning session, “Public Policy in Action—Positioning Actuaries for Societal Impact,” moderated by IABA President Gloria Gilliam. Academy volunteers are also participating in the meeting, including President Tricia Matson, who will present on a life panel. ▶ NAIC—The Academy will also present at the NAIC Summer National Meeting, Aug. 11–14 in Columbus, Ohio. Casualty, health, and life staff and volunteers will present to NAIC actuarial task forces, including a presentation by Health Vice President Annette James to the Health Actuarial (B) Task Force on the Academy’s ongoing Broadening the Focus initiative. For those attending, be sure to RSVP for the Academy’s Aug. 11 dinner (by today, Aug. 7). ▶ OLA—Volunteers will present at the Organization of Latino Actuaries’ 2026 OLA Avanza Conference, Aug. 12–14 in Chicago. Homeowners Insurance Task Force Vice Chairperson and Extreme Events Committee member Emma Casehart will present “Professionalism for All, from the Newly Credentialed to the Seasoned Actuary,” and Member-Selected Director and Vice Chairperson of the Life Practice Council Donna Megregian will present “Public Policy in Action—Positioning Actuaries for Societal Impact.” | | |

Actuarially Sound Covers Award for Research Finalists The latest Actuarially Sound blog post, by Academy Assistant Research Director Kim Ferrero, covers the recent presentation of the 2026 Award for Research to Quebec-based Ph.D. candidate Olivier Côté. Public Policy in Brief- The Pension Committee released an issue brief, ERISA After 50 Years: Looking Ahead, which discusses further changes to the landmark 1974 law and regulations, as well as corresponding changes to broader U.S. retirement policy that could help create a more effective and efficient retirement system.
- The Medicaid Committee submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on the interim final rule regarding the Medicaid Community Engagement Requirement for Certain Individuals.
- The Longevity Risk Task Force presented to the NAIC Longevity Risk (E/A) Subgroup on longevity reinsurance illustrations for development of RBC C-2 factors.
