Academy Recognizes 9/11 Anniversary

The Academy notes the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, recognizing the country’s immense loss, sacrifice, and courage on that historic day.

What Climate Change Means for Insurance Risk

A new policy paper from the Academy’s Climate Change Joint Committee examines how increasing extreme weather events are affecting insurance affordability, availability, and accessibility.

The paper looks at the implications across property, flood, health, and agricultural insurance and considers the implications for insurers, reinsurers, regulators, and policyholders.

Call for Volunteers, Member-Selected Directors Selection Continue

The Academy’s annual Call for Volunteers and member-selected directors (MSD) selection process are underway.

▶ The Call for Volunteers is open through Sept. 21, with as many as 220 committee seats and additional short-term opportunities open. See Academy President Tricia Matson’s letter to members on the Volunteer Opportunities webpage.

▶ The MSD selection process runs through next Wednesday, Sept. 16. Members should have received an email from Intelliscan ([email protected]) with a link to your personal selection page. For more on candidates Jamala Arland, Tyson Mohr, and Stephen Smith—and a look at the 2026–2027 Board slate—visit the Board Selection Center.

USQS Attestation Form Update—Download Your Data

The U.S. Qualification Standards (USQS) Attestation Form was developed to help actuaries voluntarily demonstrate that they meet USQS requirements for signing NAIC annual life, health, and property & casualty statements of actuarial opinion (SAOs).

The Academy is upgrading the USQS Attestation Form. If you have used this form in the past, you may download your data until Sept. 30. After Sept. 30, the form and data will no longer be available. The new form will be ready later this fall.

Volunteers, Staff Presenting at Next Week’s CLRS

Academy volunteers and staff will present at next week’s Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar (CLRS) in Las Vegas. The annual conference, co-sponsored by the Academy and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), will be held Sept. 14–16 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Attendees are welcome and encouraged to stop by the Academy’s booth. See the full agenda.

In addition to the many other excellent sessions planned at CLRS, Academy-led presentations scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 15, include:

▶ A 10 a.m. professionalism session featuring Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) member Arthur Randolph and former ABCD member Albert Beer on “Sticking to Ethics in High-Stakes Environments.”

▶ Findings from two forthcoming Academy work products related to bias will be discussed at 11:30 a.m. by Director of Research Steve Jackson and Committee on Equity and Fairness Committee member Tara Miller. Casualty Policy Project Manager Rob Fischer will also moderate a roundtable lunchtime session immediately following.

▶ Committee on Cyber Risk Chairperson Sam Tashima and Vice Chairperson Isabelle McCullough will present in a 3 p.m. cyber insurance market trends session moderated by committee member Janet Kang-Gurvin.

▶ Steve Jackson and Assistant Director of Research Kim Ferrero will present in a 4:30 p.m. session on risk-based capital ratios and impairment risk.

Research Takeaways From the Latest ARIA Meeting

The latest Actuarially Sound blog post covers research-related takeaways from last month’s American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) annual meeting, which offered an invaluable vantage point on forces reshaping risk, solvency, and insurance regulation.

Academy Cited in CBO Health Report

Individual and Small Group Markets Committee Chairperson Jason Karcher and the Academy were cited in a new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report, Health Insurance Options for Small Businesses. The report describes aspects of the small-group health insurance market, noting that in most states, plans in that market are available to businesses with 50 or fewer employees. Karcher, along with other experts, reviewed drafts of the report before publication.

Life Webinar Examines IRC Changes

Thursday’s life webinar, Modeling IRC Section 7702 Rate Changes: A Calculator Demonstration, featured Tax Committee presenters who gave an overview of Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 7702 minimum interest rates and more. Watch a replay on Academy Learning.

Public Policy in Brief

The Homeowners Insurance Task Force, Extreme Events and Property Lines Committee, and Climate Change Joint Committee submitted a joint comment letter to the NAIC’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation and Risk Modeling (EX) Working Group on its recent exposure of the Residential Mitigation Grant Program Model Act.
The Health Practice Council commented on Actuarial Standard of Practice (ASOP) No. 45, The Use of Health Status-Based Risk Adjustment Methodologies, and commented on ASOP No. 49, Medicaid Managed Care Capitation Rates.
