Call-for-Volunteers Kicking Off; Free Membership Webinar Next Week | | |

Interested in volunteering for the Academy? Volunteers help fulfill the Academy’s mission of serving the public and the U.S. actuarial profession across professionalism, public policy, education, and membership activities. The annual Call for Volunteers kicks off Monday, Aug. 17, and will run through mid-September. Academy staff along with Academy Medicaid Committee Chairperson Marlene Howard will host a free online information session next Thursday, Aug. 20, from noon to 1:15 p.m. EDT, outlining volunteer opportunities, roles and responsibilities, and more. Come with your questions and learn how you can answer this year’s Call for Volunteers. Deadline Tomorrow for Prospective ASB, ABCD Volunteers A reminder that the Academy is seeking volunteers to serve three-year terms on the Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) and the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Academy staff and volunteers continued providing the profession’s essential actuarial perspective to insurance public policymaking by presenting and interacting with state regulators and other stakeholders at the NAIC Summer National Meeting in Columbus, Ohio. Academy President Tricia Matson, President-Elect Frank Todisco, Casualty Vice President and President-Elect nominee Susan Kent, Health Vice President Annette James, Life Vice President Kirsten Pedersen, and Executive Director Bill Michalisin were present, along with Academy Senior Director Geralyn Trujillo, Senior Actuaries Julia Lerche (health) and Seong-min Eom (life and risk management & financial reporting), and other Academy policy and research staff. The Academy also hosted a reception and dinner on Tuesday for members and stakeholders. James and Lerche presented on Academy health priorities and activities including the Broadening the Focus initiative to NAIC’s Health Actuarial (B) Task Force (HATF); Pedersen and Eom presented on life issues and key cross-practice opportunities to the Life Actuarial (A) Task Force (LATF); and Public Policy Director of State Outreach Katie Dzurec presented on casualty issues to NAIC’s Casualty Actuarial and Statistical (C) Task Force (CASTF). Matson also presented at HATF, LATF, and CASTF, introducing the Academy’s professionalism speakers and the policy updates. Sharing the latest news on the Academy’s critical self-regulation and professionalism activities, Committee on Qualifications (COQ) Chairperson and Academy Past President Maryellen Coggins presented virtually to LATF; COQ member and longtime Academy life volunteer Linda Lankowski gave in-person presentations to HATF and CASTF; while ASB Chairperson Laura Hanson presented to the three task forces virtually, as did ABCD Vice Chairpersons Shawna Ackerman (LATF, CASTF) and April Choi (HATF).

The Academy presented at the International Association of Black Actuaries (IABA) annual meeting last weekend in Charlotte, N.C. Senior Health Actuary Julia Lerche presented “Public Policy in Action—Positioning Actuaries for Societal Impact,” in a session moderated by IABA President Gloria Gilliam. Academy staff and volunteers also interacted with meeting attendees at the Academy’s booth, offering membership and other information. Academy President Tricia Matson also presented on a life panel. OLA—Volunteers presented at the Organization of Latino Actuaries’ 2026 OLA Avanza Conference this week in Chicago. Homeowners Insurance Task Force Vice Chairperson and Extreme Events Committee member Emma Casehart presented “Professionalism for All, from the Newly Credentialed to the Seasoned Actuary,” and Member-Selected Director and Vice Chairperson of the Life Practice Council Donna Megregian presented “Public Policy in Action—Positioning Actuaries for Societal Impact.” Abacus Actuaries—Member-Selected Director and Health Equity Committee Chairperson Becky Sheppard will present virtually in the Aug. 17 “Public Policy in Action” session to Abacus Actuaries, an affinity organization of Asian actuaries of which the Academy is a sponsor. Academy staff will also be at an Abacus meeting in New York next Friday.

LHQ Seminar—Early Discounts End Monday | | |

Early registration discounts end Monday, Aug. 17, for the Academy’s 2026 Life and Health Qualifications Seminar. The annual seminar remains a great way to achieve basic education or continuing education credit you need to qualify to issue actuarial opinions for the NAIC Life and Accident & Health (A&H) Annual Statement or the NAIC Health Annual Statement. Attendees learn directly from experienced faculty who are leaders in the profession; earn valuable continuing education (CE) credit; and have an opportunity to network with both experts and peers. The seminar will be held earlier this year than previously—it’s scheduled for Sept. 28–Oct. 1 in Arlington, Va., just outside Washington, D.C. Register today. | | |
Casualty Quarterly Spotlights Mitigating P/C Bias In the Summer Casualty Quarterly, P/C Committee on Equity and Fairness Chairperson Tyson Mohr and Vice Chairperson Devyn McNicoll address potential bias in P/C insurance. Also in the issue, the Casualty Practice Council will present at upcoming meetings including September’s CLRS in Las Vegas, and Kevin Dyke’s nomination to succeed Susan Kent as casualty vice president is shared. | | |
Public Policy in Brief- The Pension Committee submitted comments to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) on the proposed revisions to Accounting Standards Codification Topic 715.
- The C-3 Subcommittee presented proposed C-3 Field Test Specifications revisions to the NAIC’s Life RBC Work Group.
- The Life Reserves Subcommittee responded to LATF’s request to review the Valuation Manual prescribed default and spread methodology used in VM-20, VM-21, and VM-22.
- The Life Illustrations Subcommittee offered comments to the NAIC Life Insurance and Annuities (A) Committee in response to a June presentation regarding IUL and premium financing.
