Academy Bolsters Its Role Serving the Public and the Actuarial Profession

The Academy is hiring four staff actuaries in the life, health, casualty, and retirement practice areas. Executive Director Bill Michalisin notes in his “CEO Insights” column the investment comes as the environment in which actuaries operate becomes increasingly complex and the Academy continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of its members, policymakers, regulators, and other stakeholders—all part of its mission to serve the public and the U.S. actuarial profession by providing objective, independent, and balanced actuarial expertise.

Other recent features explore the growing popularity of GLP-1 medications; “polycrisis,” including geopolitical conflict and economic volatility in an increasingly interconnected world; and a two-part series on the evolution of risk.

Actuary Voices podcast

Hear About AI, Polycrisis, and More on the Academy’s Podcast

Recent episodes of the Academy’s Actuary Voices podcast cover topics including the actuarial profession’s global role; Elizabeth Eason, the host of the Network of Actuarial Women and Allies’ (NAWA) Real Actuarial Women podcast; how everyone “maths differently” and building confidence; the effects of polycrisis; and the rising use of GLP-1 therapies.

NAIC Responds to Sen. Warren on Insurers’ Private Credit Exposure—Why Actuaries Are Paying Attention

The NAIC sent a letter in response to Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s letter on insurers’ investments in private credit, private equity, and affiliated companies. Actuaries test whether an insurer’s investments will hold up well enough to pay future claims, which now focuses on assets that could lose value suddenly or could be difficult to sell or price. The Academy is considering how to best engage with Sen. Warren’s office to provide additional actuarial perspective, and looks forward to discussion on the issue at the NAIC Fall National Meeting in Dallas in November.
