The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) was created to safeguard private-sector defined benefit pension plans, protecting participants while keeping insurance premiums at a minimum. Yet today, some argue that the current premium structure may be contributing to the decline of the very plans the agency was designed to support.

This webinar will examine whether the PBGC’s single-employer premium framework continues to align with its original mission and explore potential approaches for reform. Speakers will discuss the policy, budgetary, and practical challenges that can make meaningful changes difficult to achieve, while also comparing the single-employer and multiemployer programs to highlight key differences and insights for the future of pension insurance.

Who should attend: Academy members, agency staff, Hill staff, and public policy stakeholders

At the conclusion of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the PBGC’s mission and how current single-employer premiums align with that mission;
  • Evaluate potential reforms to the single-employer premium system, including the policy, budgetary, and implementation challenges that may affect their feasibility; and
  • Identify key differences between the PBGC’s single-employer and multiemployer programs and the implications of those distinctions.
