What does it mean to fulfill the profession’s responsibility to the public? The Academy explored this essential question during The Profession’s Responsibility to the Public webinar.
In January 2001, the five U.S.-based actuarial organizations adopted the Code of Professional Conduct (“Code”) that set forth what it means for an actuary to act as a professional. The Code describes some of the responsibilities that the actuarial profession has to the public, to clients and employers, and to the actuarial profession. The purpose of the Code is to require actuaries to adhere to high standards of conduct, practice, and qualifications, thereby supporting the actuarial profession in fulfilling its responsibility to the public. But what does it really mean to fulfill this responsibility?
During this webinar, the Academy explored this question and learned more about:
- Precept 1 of the Code as the source of the actuarial profession’s responsibility to the public and to uphold the reputation of the actuarial profession.
- The state of the profession: If the public does not think we are responsible, do we have a profession?
- The key aspects on maintaining the profession’s relevance.
This webinar was sponsored by the American Academy of Actuaries’ Council on Professionalism and is co-sponsored by ASPPA, CAS, CCA, and SOA.
