ABOUT THIS WEBINAR
Employer-sponsored retirement plans provide important protections for spouses, such as in the event of divorce or the participant’s death. Although there are various protections provided under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), gaps in spousal protections still remain, especially for the plans most private sector workers participate in—defined contribution plans, such as 401(k) plans. Proposed legislation seeks to address some of these issues, and Congress has requested the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to examine the need for stronger protections.
In particular, attendees will:
- Understand the gaps in spousal benefit protections for employer-sponsored retirement plans and examine proposals for improvement; and
- Explore the practical challenges of utilizing the existing protections that exist.
