The Academy’s Social Security Committee has released an infographic based on the issue brief, Reforming Social Security Sooner Rather Than Later, as projections about the Social Security’s combined trust fund reserves show funds will be depleted around 2034. At that time, its income would be able to pay only about 80% of the benefits scheduled for its anticipated 81 million beneficiaries. It is important that Congress focus on the solvency issue sooner rather than later as delay narrows the viable options.
