Member-Selected Directors Process Underway-Take Part Now

The process to choose member-selected directors for the Academy’s Board began Wednesday and will run for two weeks through Sept. 20. Members should have received a Sept. 6 email from our vendor, Intelliscan, via academy@intelliscaninc.net. The candidates are Lena Black, Donna Megregian, and Maambo Mujala. For more information, visit the Board Selection Center, which includes links to their bios and statements. All members are encouraged to take part in the selection process.
Next Week-Professionalism Webinar to Examine the Code
Next week’s professionalism webinar, “The Code of Professional Conduct: Succeeding at Self-Regulation,” will offer a discussion about the Code and its importance to maintaining the actuarial profession’s self-regulation status. Presenters-Academy President Ken Kent, Professionalism and Education Vice President Tim Geddes, and Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline member Cande Olsen-will address these topics. The webinar is next Thursday, Sept. 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EDT. Register today.
Life, ERM ASOP Comments Due Next Week
Four actuarial standards of practice (ASOPs) are currently exposed for comment, and three have a comment deadline of next Friday, Sept. 15:
In addition, comments on ASOP No. 36, Statements of Actuarial Opinion Regarding Property/Casualty Loss, Loss Adjustment Expense, or Other Reserves, are due Nov. 1.
Please consider submitting comments on ASOPs that apply to your practice area-your contributions help strengthen the profession. If you need a little extra incentive, remember that time spent preparing comments on a draft ASOP may count as continuing education (CE).
Envision Tomorrow-Research Poster Exhibition Will Explore Cutting-Edge Topics
This year, the Academy will be hosting a Research Poster Exhibition in conjunction with Envision Tomorrow, the Academy’s Annual Meeting. The goal of this exhibition is to provide a platform for researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts to explore cutting-edge topics, share insights, and discuss advancements within the field of actuarial science and related fields. The posters will be available for viewing throughout the event to offer opportunities for meaningful discussions during receptions and networking breaks.
Envision Tomorrow will be held Nov. 13-14 at the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. You can learn more about the event and how to submit your poster here. The deadline to submit your poster for consideration is Sept. 29.
Webinar Looks at Non-Variable Annuity PBR Framework
Wednesday’s life webinar, “Non-Variable Annuity PBR Framework Updates,” offered information on the latest developments for the future non-variable annuity PBR framework. Presenters gave an overview of the proposed methodology, along with updates on regulatory discussions, field testing, project timelines, and outstanding framework elements yet to be determined.

Alert Highlights Academy AI Resources
Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining a foothold as more and more people take advantage of the technology for both professional and personal use. The Academy has compiled AI-related resources, including creating a dedicated section of the Contingencies‘ website, and will offer two general sessions at the Envision Tomorrow: 2023 Annual Meeting in November. The September/October Contingencies includes three features with a focus on professionalism, Academy President Ken Kent’s look at the breadth of activities the Academy undertakes on behalf of the publics it serves, an Up to Code on “A Lifetime of Professionalism,” and “ASOPs-Your Input Wanted,” which lays out revisions to ASOPs currently exposed for comment.

The Risk Management and Financial Reporting Council submitted comments on Sept. 1 to the NAIC on its draft model bulletin Use of Algorithms, Predictive Models, and Artificial Intelligence Systems by Insurers. The comments, crafted in collaboration with the Academy’s casualty, life, and health practice councils, laud the framework’s focus on decisions as the key point of interest, and note the model will serve as a guide in assessing the depth and breadth of any necessary documentation and governance. The written comments complement verbal comments given during the NAIC National Summer Meeting last month.

Committee on Property and Liability Financial Reporting (COPLFR) Vice Chairperson Michelle Iarkowski led discussions on two topics during Tuesday’s virtual meeting of the NAIC’s Casualty Actuarial and Statistical (C) Task Force on COPLFR’s proposal regarding number of years data in Schedule P triangles, and financial reporting of claims handling reserves (A&O Expense) under SSAP 55.
