TOP NEWS Academy Presenting at NAIC Summer Meeting |
|
Academy volunteers and staff are kicking off presentations this weekend at the NAIC Summer National Meeting in Minneapolis. The Casualty Practice Council (CPC), Health Practice Council (HPC), and Life Practice Council will present updates on their activity to NAIC’s actuarial task forces in those practice areas. Volunteer leadership from the Committee on Qualifications, Actuarial Standards Board, and Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline will offer professionalism updates to the three NAIC actuarial task forces as well. Beyond the presentations, the Academy will host onsite networking efforts and offer verbal comments with a focus on the commissioner-led meetings related to risk-based capital model governance and a proposed AI model law. Look for a recap of the presentations in next week’s issue, along with a blog and recorded webinar by Academy staff later this month.

Xi Xin Receives Academy’s Third Annual Award for Research Xi Xin, a Ph.D. candidate at Australia’s University of New South Wales, received the Academy’s third annual Award for Research. The award was presented to him virtually by Research Committee Chairperson Grace Lattyak at the Actuarial Research Conference in Toronto on July 31. The award, which includes a $7,500 honorarium, recognizes work by an early-career scholar contributing significantly to an actuarial perspective on a public policy issue of interest to U.S. actuaries and public policymakers. This year’s theme was “Bias in Assessing Financial Risk: Origins, Detection, Mitigation,” and Xin received the award as co-author of research published in 2024 in the North American Actuarial Journal (Vol. 28, Issue 2), “Antidiscrimination Insurance Pricing: Regulations, Fairness Criteria, and Models.” “This research made a compelling contribution that highlights the essential actuarial role in the ongoing, consequential dialogues among regulators, actuaries, and other stakeholders about the effective regulation of bias and indirect discrimination in insurance,” Lattyak said. See the news release, and read more about the Academy’s ARC 2025 activities in the July Actuarial Update (p. 3). Stay tuned for a webinar featuring Xin later this year.
