Call for Volunteers-Survey Reminder, Information Session Held
Members interested in the Academy’s many volunteering opportunities, including short- and long-term activities, are encouraged to take the Call for Volunteers Survey. The survey will remain open through Sept. 6. The Academy hosted an Information Session on Thursday for members interested in becoming volunteers; the session will be available on-demand next week for those that missed it.
Actuary Voices-Robert Eaton Shares Perspectives on AI and the Actuarial Profession

The latest Actuary Voices profiles Robert Eaton, a life/health actuary who has been active in long-term care and other Academy workstreams, and the author of the Contingencies feature “The Future Is Here,” on artificial intelligence (AI). He discusses his education and background, becoming an actuary, and how the evolving field of AI could benefit the actuarial profession.
Issue Brief Offers Health Equity Overview
A new Health Equity Committee issue brief, Health Benefit Design Innovations for Advancing Health Equity: Removing the Barriers to Successful Implementation-Issue Brief 1: Overview, provides an overview of issues related to designing health benefits to improve health equity. This issue brief is the first in a new series that will explore potential strategies for incorporating more equity-enhancing features into health insurance benefit designs. The series will draw insights from small workshops and other conversations that are being held with a variety of stakeholders and decision-makers representing various aspects of the health care and health insurance ecosystem.
Academy Attends IABA Annual Meeting
Data Science and Analytics Committee Chairperson and Academy Board member Dorothy Andrews presented Saturday, Aug. 5, on “Defining Data Biases and Unfairly Discriminatory Considerations” at the IABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. IABA attendees visited the Academy’s booth for information on becoming members, volunteering opportunities, participating in the Academy’s many events, and more.
Climate Risk Webinar Looks at All Practice Areas
Climate Change Joint Committee members presented at Wednesday’s webinar, “How Climate Risk Applies to All Actuaries,” which included a look at all practice areas and why all actuaries should learn about climate change. Slides and a video recording will be available as a complimentary member benefit.
September Professionalism Webinar to Look at The Code
The Academy’s next professionalism webinar, “The Code of Professional Conduct: Succeeding at Self-Regulation,” will offer perspectives from experts-Academy President Ken Kent, Professionalism Vice President Tim Geddes, and Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline member Cande Olsen-on the obligation of maintaining the profession’s self-regulating status by adhering to the Code’s high standards. The webinar will take place Sept. 14-registration will open next week.
One Week Left for CLRS Early Discounts
Early registration discounts end next week for the 2023 Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar. Co-sponsored by the Academy and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), the annual CLRS will be held Sept. 11-13 in Orlando, Fla. Discounts are available through next Friday, Aug. 18-to register, visit the CLRS webpage.
