The Robert J. Myers Public Service Award honors actuaries who have made an exceptional contribution to the common good. The Myers Award honors an actuary for a single noteworthy public service achievement or a career devoted to public service.

About the Award

Robert J. Myers was the chief actuary for the Social Security Administration and was instrumental in the design and funding of the Social Security system.

In recognition of his many years of extraordinary public service, the Academy created the Robert J. Myers Public Service Award in 1994.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible candidates are members of the Academy who have:

  • demonstrated their commitment to professionalism;
  • made an extraordinary contribution to the public good through service to the government or other organizations in the public sphere, even when conflicted by political pressure;
  • been an inspiration to practicing actuaries; and
  • commanded respect inside and outside the profession.

All Academy members are eligible for the award. Former presidents may be nominated, but only their post-presidential contributions will be considered. Nominees may be current or former government employees, staff of government-focused organizations, or unpaid volunteers at philanthropic organizations.

Paid consultants, actuarial committee members, and officers of actuarial organizations are not eligible.
