Envision Tomorrow Focuses on Key Election-Year Issues
The Academy held a successful annual meeting, Envision Tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday in Washington, D.C., putting a spotlight on key issues with less than three weeks until the presidential election. The theme of the meeting was “Exploring a World of Risk” and included such topics as the global risk environment, climate change, aging, financial inclusion, state regulatory trends, Medicare, artificial intelligence (AI), and Social Security. It also featured a general session on the Academy’s commitment to professionalism as a self-regulated profession.

In her address, Academy President Lisa Slotznick highlighted the 2024 Election Issues Clearinghouse covering many of the above issues. The Academy’s presidential and leadership transition will take place next month, when Slotznick will be succeeded by President-Elect Darrell Knapp.

General sessions included numerous stakeholders on various panels examining relevant issues: a renowned panel of experts explored AI’s opportunities and risks; “A View From the States” featured NAIC President and Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew Mais and new CEO Gary Anderson discussing trends across states and work at the NAIC; AARP Chief Public Policy Officer Debra Bailey Whitman engaged in a fireside chat on longevity and potential policy impact; and a professionalism session featured self-regulation expert Justin Connor and actuarial professionalism experts discussing the role and importance of being a self-regulated profession.

The Academy also bestowed its annual awards-the Jarvis Farley Service Award to Al Bingham; the Robert J. Myers Public Service Award to Fred Andersen; Outstanding Volunteerism Awards to Rhonda Ahrens, Nancy Behrens, Michelle Iarkowski, and Becky Sheppard; the Award for Research to Doron Samuell; and the Rising Actuary Awards to nine recipients-Emma Casehart, Joe Dorocak, Tina Kang, Kirsten Knutson, Christopher Lombardi, Margo MacKenzie, Isabelle McCullough, Amanda Muhlbaier, and Silver Zhou-who will be profiled in the upcoming November/December Contingencies.

In addition to the NAIC, officials from the Social Security Administration, the Office of Personnel Management; the Department of Health and Human Services; the Government Accountability Office, the Congressional Budget Office, the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, and the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight attended and/or presented.
Also attending were representatives of other actuarial and affinity organizations including the American Society of Enrolled Actuaries, Canadian Institute of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society, Conference of Consulting Actuaries, Society of Actuaries, South Asian Network of Actuaries, and The Actuarial Foundation.
