Academy Presents at CAS Annual Meeting | | | |

Volunteers and staff attended and presented at the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) annual meeting in Austin, Texas. Academy President Darrell Knapp and CEO Bill Michalisin shared Academy updates, Casualty Practice Council (CPC) priorities, and discussed collaboration opportunities with the CAS Board. Casualty Policy Project Manager Rob Fischer and Senior Casualty Fellow Rich Gibson were joined by Nicole Elliott, chief actuary for the Texas Department of Insurance’s Property and Casualty Division, in presenting a 2025 Public Policy Update—an overview of CPC activity, regulatory activities from the NAIC, and general policy updates impacting property/casualty. In addition, CPC members participated in eight sessions on a variety of topics, and Academy staff were onsite to encourage CAS members to pursue the MAAA designation and to answer other membership questions at the Academy’s booth.

New this year are separate life and health tracks, following a day of general education—and a three-hour exam on the fourth day. Broadening the Focus (health)—Health Equity Committee Chairperson Becky Sheppard and Vice Chairperson Sara Teppema led a virtual Academy discussion on Wednesday, examining the current use of financial return-on-investment when evaluating health care programs or benefits. Using discussion questions that effectively encouraged interaction with attendees, the webinar offered a first look at the Broadening the Focus project. Actuaries & Investment Management (life)—Moderated by Life Investment Analysis Subcommittee member Theresa Resnick, Thursday’s Actuaries and Investment Management: Let’s Talk! focused on how to create a robust communication system between investment management and actuaries, particularly for appointed actuaries and qualified actuaries. Climate Change Joint Committee Releases Attribution Science Issue Brief | | | |

The Climate Change Joint Committee released Attribution Science from an Actuarial Perspective, an issue brief exploring how climate attribution science can be used in risk assessment and public policy. The issue brief highlights the role of actuaries in translating complex climate data into actionable insights for insurance pricing, infrastructure planning, and resilience strategies. It also highlights the concept that actuaries can apply extreme event and climate change attribution methods to improve future risk projections, moving beyond historical data to support more informed and proactive decision-making in an evolving climate landscape. P/C RBC Committee Presents Report to NAIC The Property and Casualty Risk-Based Capital (RBC) Committee issued a report to the NAIC’s Property and Casualty Risk-Based Capital (E) Working Group, evaluating the indicated Loss Concentration Factors and Premium Concentration Factors.

- The Life Reserves Subcommittee submitted an Amendment Proposal Form (APF) on the Discount Rate for VM-20 Stochastic Reserve to the NAIC’s Life Actuarial (A) Task Force (LATF).
- The Longevity Risk Task Force provided feedback to the NAIC’s Longevity Risk (E/A) Subgroup in response to a request from the Subgroup on a framework for the RBC C-2 charge for longevity reinsurance.

Upcoming Professionalism Webinars—Bias in AI, Tales from the Dark Side Mark your calendar for two December professionalism webinars: - Identifying and Managing Bias in AI (Dec. 5) will explore potential model bias inherent risks that can arise at multiple stages of actuarial data-driven decision-making, from data collection and modeling to interpretation and implementation. This webinar is intended to meet the USQS bias requirement.
- Tales From the Dark Side (Dec. 19) will continue the popular annual professionalism webinars featuring Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) case studies.
ASB, COQ, and ABCD Volunteers Advance Professionalism, Self-Regulation Awareness Actuarial Standards Board (ASB), Committee on Qualifications (COQ), and ABCD volunteers delivered multiple presentations at actuarial club and other events, supporting actuaries and stakeholders with professionalism education and awareness of the profession’s self-regulation. - Nov. 6—Erica Baird, chairperson of the ASB’s ASOP No. 45 Task Force, presented “Elevate Your Professionalism: ASOPs Beyond the Basics” at the Actuaries’ Club of the Southwest meeting in Austin, Texas.
- Nov. 11—Linda Lankowski, former chairperson of the ASB’s Life Committee, presented “The ASOP Advantage” at John Hancock/Manulife in Boston.
- Nov. 12—COQ member Kevin Russell presented “USQS: Review and Discussion with a Committee on Qualifications Member” at the Actuaries Club of Philadelphia meeting in King of Prussia, Pa.
- Nov. 13—Former ASB Life Committee Member Lisa Kuklinski co-presented an educational session on ASOPs to arbitrators at the ARIAS conference in New York City.
- Nov. 13—ABCD Chairperson William Hines virtually presented “Professionalism Under Pressure” to the Middle Atlantic Actuarial Club.

The Fall Retirement Report recaps September’s retirement symposium, which featured officials such as U.S. Comptroller General Gene Dodaro and included discussions of key retirement issues and topics, including Social Security in its 90th year. Also in the issue, incoming Retirement Vice President Bruce Cadenhead offers insights into upcoming Retirement Practice Council priorities as well as recent legislative and regulatory activity. Academy In the News - A Forbes column on claiming strategies for Social Security retirement benefits used the jointly sponsored Actuaries Longevity Illustrator to highlight longevity considerations.
- Social Security Committee Chairperson Sam Gutterman was quoted in a MarketWatch story on generational equity and Social Security’s financial condition.
- Academy member Krista Hoglund was named one of the top 50 women leaders of Wisconsin for 2025 by The Women We Admire.
