Academy Contributes Actuarial Expertise and Policy Insights at NAIC Spring Meeting In its role as the national actuarial association and voice of the U.S. actuarial profession, the Academy was represented by volunteers and staff who delivered a broad range of presentations and project updates at the NAIC Spring National Meeting in Indianapolis. President Darrell Knapp represented the Academy—including giving updates on the Committee on Qualifications and the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline—and Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) Chairperson Kevin Dyke gave an update on ASB activity to NAIC actuarial task forces. The three practice councils offered updates on their work to the respective life, health, and casualty actuarial task forces. Other presentations included an update on long-term care and health risk-based capital from the Health Practice Council, an update on life risk-based capital projects and the VM-22 field study from the Life Practice Council, and an update on casualty risk-based capital from the Casualty Practice Council. See a rundown of the many presentations and updates on the Public Policy webpage. Of particular note was the first in-person meeting of NAIC’s new Risk-Based Capital (RBC) Governance Model (EX) Task Force. The Academy offered verbal comments to the Task Force in Indianapolis, which echoed comments from the Academy’s joint practice-council comment letter which was submitted in mid-March. These contributions reflect the Academy’s commitment to sound public policy and actuarial professionalism—highlighting the value of membership for U.S. actuaries and their employers, and the Academy’s role as a trusted resource for regulators and policymakers. Look for more coverage in the upcoming March Actuarial Update and the Academy’s regular post-meeting recap, which will be available in early April.

Professionalism Webinar Covers the Code Friday’s professionalism webinar, A Deep Dive Into the Code of Professional Conduct, featured Knapp and the Academy’s previous presidents Lisa Slotznick and Ken Kent. They presented on the Code of Professional Conduct, which identifies the responsibilities actuaries have to the public, their clients and employers, and the profession. Presenters drew on their deep experience in an engaging discussion of the Code’s precepts, including Precept 1, which Knapp said, “essentially requires you to act honestly, with integrity, and not do anything that would harm the reputation of the profession.” The webinar wrapped up with a lively Q&A session.
