Volunteers and staff wrapped up presentations at the NAIC Spring National Meeting in Phoenix last weekend. Academy President Lisa Slotznick led professionalism updates to NAIC task forces, and Senior Casualty Fellow Rich Gibson presented an overview on cyber risk issues, including the Cyber Risk Toolkit.

ABCD Releases 2023 Annual Summary of Activities
The Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) released its Annual Summary of Activities—2023. This document details the activities the ABCD undertook in 2023, including handling 141 cases, which included 119 requests for guidance (RFGs) and 22 inquiries. It received 14 new inquiry complaints and closed 16 inquiry cases. Additional outreach and engagement efforts are also detailed, and examples of the cases handled are included in the document.
Contingencies Web Exclusive Highlights Women in the Profession
To mark Women’s History Month and the Academy’s focus on highlighting the diverse experiences of our members, a new Contingencies web exclusive, “Celebrating Women in the Actuarial Field,” features interviews with leading female actuaries discussing their professional journeys, advice they’d share, and what more can be done to support the numbers and careers of women in the profession.
Actuary Voices Features Aree Bly
Also as part of the Women’s History Month, the latest Actuary Voices is a conversation with Aree Bly, a health actuary who serves on the board of the Network of Actuarial Women and Allies (NAWA), who speaks about her experiences as an actuary, and as a success coach and advocate for women in the profession. Academy Brings Actuarial Perspective to 2024 Cyber Issues Webinar
Norman Niami, an Academy member and Immediate Past Chairperson of the Committee on Cyber Risk, discussed the Academy’s Cyber Risk Toolkit, the latest issues surrounding assessment and data tracking of this risk, and other topics as a panelist on Tuesday’s Insurance Journal webinar, “Weathering the Storm: Cyber Risk in 2024” (available to view via external website). Niami’s remarks led Insurance Journal’s coverage of the webinar.
Next Week—Academy Volunteer Leadership Webinar
The Academy will host a webinar for volunteers serving as chairpersons and vice chairpersons next week featuring President Lisa Slotznick, President-Elect Darrell Knapp, and Executive Director Bill Michalisin, to cover governance and organization-related topics and more that are specific to the ongoing success and impact of our volunteer leaders. The webinar is on Tuesday, March 26—volunteers serving in a leadership role this year may register here. A second webinar for general committee members will be held next month, on April 25.

Reminder—Research Award Deadline March 31
A reminder that submissions are due March 31 for the Academy’s second annual Award for Research, which recognizes an early-career scholar whose work contributes significantly to an actuarial perspective on a public policy issue of interest to U.S. actuaries and public policymakers. The award includes a monetary prize of $7,500, and the recipient will be invited to present their research at Envision Tomorrow, the Academy’s Annual Meeting in October.
