Helping workers and retirees who have pension questions

The Pension Assistance List (PAL) is an American Academy of Actuaries program that serves the public. It is intended to provide professional services to consumers who have questions about their pension plans.

When a pension assistance request is received, the PAL coordinator solicits volunteer actuaries from the PAL volunteer list. A volunteer actuary who has appropriate expertise related to a specific request may offer to handle the pension request. If a PAL volunteer is identified, the PAL coordinator contacts the consumer notifying him/her of the volunteer actuary’s name and that the volunteer will reach out within seven days. The volunteer actuary offers up to four hours of pro bono service.

Please note that PAL is not intended to provide legal support or expert witness service in connection with pending or contemplated litigation. Also, due to the volume of PAL requests for pension assistance, the wait time may take much longer than usual.

The PAL program has been featured in a number of publications, including the Wall Street Journal, The New York TimesCNBC, and Forbes.
