As international secretary, I work to coordinate the Academy’s involvement with the International Actuarial Association, its numerous committees and task forces, and actuaries from around the globe to increase the effectiveness of the Academy and the U.S. actuarial profession.  The international secretary position was created in 2007 with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more important for the Academy and the U.S. profession to coordinate our activities at the IAA. Together with Academy leadership and our dedicated volunteers participating on IAA committees, we work to represent the interests of U.S. actuaries at the IAA.

Over the past 5 years, international developments have continued to increase at an exponential rate. In terms of international accounting standards, solvency regulation, enterprise risk management and international actuarial standards, now more than ever, U.S. actuaries need to be represented at the table. As the Academy’s international secretary, I’ve had an opportunity to monitor these developments and make sure that U.S. actuaries are represented in these discussions.  Connecting with colleagues from around the world has certainly been a rewarding experience and I encourage all Academy members to learn more about how the activities of the IAA can influence practice here in the U.S. and how you can get involved.

In 2014, the International Congress of Actuaries will meet in Washington, D.C.  The Congress is a forum for actuaries to attend educational sessions and to discuss actuarial developments throughout the world and I encourage U.S. actuaries to attend what will surely be an excellent opportunity to expand the profession’s horizons.
