What is MAAA?
MAAA stands for Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a designation that signifies an actuary’s commitment to actuarial professionalism-and demonstrates alignment with the Academy’s mission to serve the public and the U.S. actuarial profession.
As the national actuarial association for actuaries practicing in the United States, the Academy is the home of the profession’s professionalism framework-housing the Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) and the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD), overseeing the U.S. Qualification Standards, and supporting self-regulation and the Academy’s work to provide objective, nonpartisan actuarial analysis to inform public policy and decision-makers.
Being an MAAA is both a responsibility and a privilege-reflecting a deep commitment to the integrity and strength of the U.S. actuarial profession and its role in serving the public.
“I value the stability and credibility that Academy membership provides, including adherence to the code of professional conduct and the ASOPs. But what I value most is the lifelong relationships built through volunteering.”
“I believe the Academy represents the voice of reason. We strive to represent an unbiased and nonpartisan view that the public can rely on. The Academy is the institution that aggregates individual efforts to advance the profession and represent the public.”
“It is important that a profession can be self-regulating with noble goals. The Academy provides the shield for our profession to ensure that we, as actuaries, maintain the utmost credibility in our work.”
“The ability to volunteer on Academy committees and now serve on the Academy Board has opened up so many doors for me. I would never have expanded my horizons and accomplished what I have if I hadn’t joined The Academy.”
