Rade Musulin

Jarvis Farley Service Award

Rade Musulin, a former casualty vice president, will receive the Jarvis Farley Service Award—a lifetime achievement award that honors a member whose volunteer efforts on behalf of the Academy have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession. Musulin’s nearly 25 years of Academy volunteer service stands as an extraordinary testament to his commitment to the U.S. actuarial profession, in addition to his work outside of the Academy. His work has included advancing knowledge and public acceptance of hurricane and catastrophe models, to broadening the property/casualty conversation to include climate risk, cyber risk, and sustainability. Musulin served on multiple Academy committees and work groups, including the Flood Insurance Work Group (chairperson), P/C Extreme Events and Property Lines Committee, and Terrorism Risk Insurance Subcommittee.

Dave Gustafson

Robert J. Myers Public Service Award

Dave Gustafson, former chief policy actuary at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), will receive the Robert J. Myers Public Service Award—recognizing a member who has made an exceptional contribution to the common good, either for a single noteworthy public service achievement or a career devoted to public service. Gustafson, who retired in 2021, was selected for his extraordinary four-decade career at the PBGC, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s defined benefit retirement system including providing keen insights to the Department of Defense on military compensation reforms. Along with his leadership at the Treasury Department in evaluating distressed multiemployer pension funds, his career showcases the wealth of public service and breadth of impact. Gustafson has served in a variety of Academy volunteer roles, including on the Retirement Practice Council, Council on Professionalism, and Actuarial Standards Board.

Outstanding Volunteerism Awards

Four volunteers will receive the Outstanding Volunteerism Award (OVA), for those who have performed conspicuously above and beyond reasonably expected duties and responsibilities.

Marc Altschull

Marc Altschull

In recognition of his extensive volunteer work this year, including as chairperson of the Investment Analysis Subcommittee and his instrumental role in creating the Academy’s inaugural Insurance Investment Summit, held in New York in May. He dedicated countless hours to develop strategic objectives, coordinate the program agenda, recruit speakers and sponsors, and guide both the subcommittee and Academy’s Education and Events Department, resulting in a highly successful summit that established the foundation for future iterations.

Tyson Mohr

Tyson Mohr

In recognition of his significant contributions as vice chairperson of the Property and Casualty Equity and Fairness Committee, where he actively participated in NAIC subgroups and provided valuable input on critical bias and fairness issues in insurance. His work developing bias surveys to better understand actuarial perspectives, participating in working groups to provide feedback on actuarial standard of practice (ASOP) exposure drafts, and contributing to market conduct evaluations demonstrates an unwavering dedication to equity and fairness.

Derek Skoog

Derek Skoog

In recognition of his many volunteer efforts, including as chairperson of the Medicare Committee. As chairperson of the Health Solvency Committee’s Health Underwriting Risk Factors Analysis Work Group, he spearheaded work on the “H2-Underwriting Risk Component and Managed Care Credit Calculation in the Health Risk-Based Capital Formula Report” published in April. This was a significant multi-year effort, in response to the NAIC’s Health Risk-Based Capital (E) Working Group’s request for the analysis.

Claire Wolkoff

In recognition of her work across multiple Academy committees and projects, including as chairperson of the Retirement Policy and Design Evaluation (RPADE) Committee. In this role, she led significant policy papers including Improving Retirement Outcomes, and co-led the recent paper on gig workers’ retirement needs. Her inclusive leadership style, dedication to mentoring new volunteers, and representation of the profession at venues like Columbia University exemplify outstanding commitment to the Academy’s mission.
