Tom Campbell, President (2021)Academy President Tom Campbell delivers his farewell address at the 2021 Hybrid Annual Meeting and Public Policy Forum. (Nov. 4, 2021) In a letter to members of the Academy, Academy President Tom Campbell announced the appointment of William “Bill” Michalisin, CAE, CIA, as the Academy’s Executive Director. Bill is a highly qualified and experienced professional and association leader and starts in the position on Sept. 27, 2021. Michalisin shared that he is “honored to join such a dynamic organization as the American Academy of Actuaries, which is at the forefront of critical issues, initiatives, and policies impacting the actuarial profession and the public.” In his May/June President’s Message for Contingencies, Academy President Tom Campbell discusses how the Academy built and maintains the infrastructure of professionalism that the actuarial profession relies on. (April 22, 2021) In a letter sent to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Academy President Tom Campbell reiterated and reinforced the Academy’s commitment to work with the NAIC’s Special (EX) Committee on Race and Insurance to address diversity and inclusion concerns pertaining to insurance coverages. The comments were made regarding recently proposed 2021 charges of the committee. (April 9, 2021) Following a Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) statement earlier this month regarding the CAS board’s response to member/regulator feedback on the rescinded CAS Statement of Principles on Ratemaking, Academy President Tom Campbell said that the Academy has issued and will continue to produce resources that will be useful to our members, the regulatory community, and the public that touch on P/C insurance ratemaking considerations, such as bias in data, assumptions, and models—but that practice notes are “not intended to provide interpretations of actuarial standards of practice, nor are they meant to be a codification of generally accepted actuarial practice.” Read more. (April 9, 2021) After two years of litigation funded by the Conference of Consulting Actuaries (CCA), Judge Michael Mullen of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, entered summary judgment in the lawsuit in favor of the defendants—the Academy and current and former members of its Board of Directors. Judge Mullen found that the Academy Board had the authority to adopt a September 4, 2018, bylaws amendment that changed the membership of the Academy’s Selection Committee.
