Registration Is Open for the 2025 LHQ Seminar, Nov. 17–20
Registration is open and early registration discounts are available for the 2025 Life and Health Qualifications Seminar, set for Nov. 17–20 in Arlington, Va. New this year will be separate life and health tracks, following a day of general education. Registration is limited for the popular seminar, which delivers three days of training and instruction—plus an optional three-hour exam on the fourth day—to equip you with the knowledge to gain necessary qualifications to issue NAIC blue blank or orange blank actuarial opinions. The seminar can also serve as a basic education refresher or as a source of required continuing education for more experienced actuaries. Academy Presenters Kick Off University of Illinois Regional Symposium
Academy President Darrell Knapp and Senior Casualty Fellow Rich Gibson opened the University of Illinois Actuarial Science Club’s regional symposium, “Rules and Regulations of Insurance,” in Urbana, Ill., on April 5 with individual general session presentations followed by a joint panel discussion. They provided an overview of insurance regulation in the United States, including the aims and general approaches to life, health, and property/casualty insurance regulation; discussed the Academy’s robust engagement with state and federal regulators and the U.S. actuarial profession’s self-regulation, which is housed and managed within the Academy; and fielded questions in the moderated panel discussion on hot topics.
Actuarially Sound Blog Post Recaps Academy’s Successful Hill Visits
An Actuarially Sound blog post recaps last week’s successful “Hill Visits,” in which volunteers from all practice areas and Academy staff visited key offices on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., covering issues ranging from Medicare and Social Security, to cybersecurity, flood and wildfire risk, lifetime income, and AI. Some 40 volunteers participated in more than 30 Capitol Hill visits, highlighting the Academy’s critical work in public policy and sharing their nonpartisan professional perspective with both committee and individual-member congressional staff—discussions that are essential in helping the Academy spread the word about who it is and how it can assist policymakers.

InsuranceNewsNet cited Long-Term Care Committee member Steve Schoonveld’s comments on long-term care insurance to the NAIC’s Senior Issues Task Force.

A reminder that it’s time for Academy volunteers and interested parties to submit their annual conflict of interest and continuing education (COI/CE) acknowledgments. Acknowledgments can be submitted via the “Volunteer Resources” section of the member webpage.
Volunteer Webinars Continue This Month
The Academy held the first of two volunteer webinars on Wednesday, Onboarding Volunteer Webinar for Committee Chairpersons & Vice Chairpersons, which covered governance-related topics including strategic planning, roles and responsibilities, structures, policies, and other topics that are specific to volunteer leaders.
General Committee Members, April 22—The Onboarding Volunteer Webinar for General Committee Members will cover understanding the Academy’s role, areas to volunteer in, roles and responsibilities, guidelines and policies, best practices for volunteers, and other topics specific to volunteering. Award for Research—Deadline April 15
