Actuary Voices Features SAGAA President David Daly

Actuarially Sound: ‘Alphabet Soup, Part Two—NCOIL’
The latest entry in the Academy’s Actuarially Sound blog is “Alphabet Soup Round 2—NCOIL,” in which Director of Public Policy Matthew Sonduck takes a look at the many external stakeholders the Academy engages at all levels of government on behalf of the profession—with a spotlight on NCOIL, the National Council of Insurance Legislators.
TAF Names Valerie Thompson Executive Director
The Actuarial Foundation (TAF) appointed Valerie Thompson its new executive director, which comes as TAF embarks on a new strategic plan. “Valerie Thompson is the ideal person to lead the foundation through our new chapter as we focus on the next generation of our exceptional math education programs,” TAF Board Chair Sharon Robinson said in a press release.
Academy matching donations—For TAF’s 30th anniversary this year, the Academy is matching donations to the foundation’s Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) for a total of up to $10,000 this year. Read more about the program, and the opportunity to donate, on the Academy’s MTFC webpage.

Life Webinar to Examine NAIC GOES Project
A new July life webinar will cover the NAIC’s transition from the Academy’s economic scenario generator (ESG) to a new NAIC Generator of Economic Scenarios (GOES) Project, now in its fourth year. The webinar will highlight recent updates on the GOES project, featuring a discussion of remaining decision points and challenges the project faces. Speakers will be Academy Life Vice President Jason Kehrberg, ESG Subcommittee member Iouri Karpov, and NAIC Life Examination Actuary Scott O’Neal. ESG Subcommittee Chairperson Hal Pedersen will moderate. The webinar is set for July 24—register today.

Professionalism Volunteers Spotlight Ethics at SEAC Meeting
Immediate Past President Ken Kent and Committee on Professional Responsibility (COPR) member Melissa Zrelack led a three-hour professionalism session to kick off the Southeastern Actuaries Conference’s Spring Meeting in Delray Beach, Fla., on Wednesday. They led a discussion of “Tools and Rules for Understanding and Maintaining Ethical Practice,” offering insights into the role of ethics and resolving ethical dilemmas in the context of the Code of Professional Conduct, bias, and self-regulation. They also provided a helpful review of the professionalism resources available from the Academy, including the latest COPR discussion paper, The Actuary's Toolbox: Peer Review—How Can It Help?
