Darrell Knapp Becomes President of the American Academy of Actuaries
Knapp Succeeds 2023–24 President Lisa Slotznick
WASHINGTON—Darrell Knapp, MAAA, FSA, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., took office as 2024–25 president of the American Academy of Actuaries on Nov. 13, succeeding 2023–24 Academy President Lisa Slotznick, MAAA, FCAS, to lead the U.S. national professional association of actuaries with more than 20,000 members across all actuarial practice areas.
In remarks to Academy members during the virtual presidential transition ceremony that took place on Nov. 13, Knapp said: “Helping the public understand the value of our expertise as actuaries hinges on one critical fact: Being an actuary is much more than a job—it’s being part of a profession that is accountable to others in a way that requires us to stay current and ethical in our practice….
“Our self-regulation is rooted in the Code of Professional Conduct, which sets expectations that assure the public, regulators, employers, and even other actuaries that they can rely on our work. The Academy will continue to promote this public trust, the value of the actuarial profession, and the MAAA designation through a wide range of activities. These include continuing to house and staff professionalism functions and entities, and putting our professional perspective forward objectively, which our volunteers will do at the NAIC [National Association of Insurance Commissioners] later this week and, next year, to the new Congress and the incoming Trump administration.”
Knapp is a longtime Academy volunteer, with more than 25 years of volunteer experience, including service as chairperson of the Life and Health Qualifications Seminar Subcommittee, a member of the Committee on Professionalism and Education and numerous Health Practice Council and Risk Management and Financial Reporting Council committees, and as chairperson and member of many other public policy and governance committees. He previously served as the chairperson of the Actuarial Standards Board. He retired after over 30 years as a health actuary for Ernst & Young.
