The 2012 election of Regular Directors for the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Actuaries is now complete. Congratulations to Katie Campbell, Godfrey Perrott, and Shari Westerfield. 18.7 percent of our members cast votes in the election—a higher percentage than our inaugural online voting experiment in 2011. The terms of the new members on the Academy Board of Directors will begin at the close of the Oct. 15 annual meeting of Academy membership. (August 23, 2012)
Regulators and other attendees at the NAIC summer meeting had an opportunity to talk one-on-one with representatives of the ASB, ABCD, COQ, and Council on Professionalism during a breakfast and office hours hosted by the Academy’s Council on Professionalism on Aug. 11. Topics of discussion included qualifications, use of “professional judgment” as provided in ASOPs, and the movement within the profession to risk-focused analysis. The breakfast also featured a slide presentation on professionalism. (August 22, 2012)
The Pension Committee sent comments to the Internal Revenue Service in response to its proposed regulations concerning the prohibited payment option under single-employer defined benefit plans when a plan sponsor is in bankruptcy. (August 20, 2012)

Voting has closed for the 2012 election for three open Regular Director positions for three-year terms on the Academy Board of Directors. Thanks to the thousands of Academy members who participated. Results will be announced in advance of the Academy’s Oct. 15 annual meeting. (August 17, 2012)
The Solvency Committee sent comments to the IAIS on its Draft of Common Framework for Supervision of Internationally Active Insurance Groups (ComFrame) concerning the relationship between Internationally Active Insurance Groups (IAIGs) and supervisors, and the framework for supervisors to address group-wide activities and risks. These comments were previously sent to the NAIC and IAA on July 27, 2012. (August 16, 2012)
The Flood Insurance Subcommittee presented an actuarial perspective on flood insurance reform at the NAIC’s Center for Insurance Policy and Research summit on flood insurance reform. (August 14, 2012)
