The Senior Pension Fellow will be a full-time employee of the American Academy of Actuaries, which is located in Washington, D.C., and the Fellow will work out of the Academy offices. This position reports directly to the Director of Public Policy.

- Personally connecting with external stakeholders (e.g., policymakers, media, government officials, think tanks, academics, FASB/GASB, and other opinion influencers) on issues of concern to the public and to the profession; and
- Creating opportunities for Pension Practice Council members and other Academy volunteers similarly to connect with stakeholders in support of these goals.
Responsibilities
In conjunction with the Pension Practice Council, related committees, Academy staff, and other Academy leadership, the Senior Pension Fellow will:
- Establish short- and long-term goals around retirement income security issues. Retirement income security includes pensions (defined benefit and defined contribution), other forms of deferred compensation, and Social Security. Short-term goals typically would focus on immediate changes in policy, laws, rules, and other regulations. Long-term goals will focus on broad issues related to retirement income security that shape public policy over the longterm and include such issues as longevity and the role of social insurance.
- Develop plans for achieving short- and long-term goals, including measures of effectiveness and accountabilities for the Pension Fellow and volunteer committees.
- Determine appropriate external organizations to work with the Academy to achieve its short- and long-term goals, and establish and nurture relationships with these organizations. This would include work with Congress and the federal executive branch; public policy, professional, and trade organizations; and the news media on retirement policy topics. Expand the reach of the Academy to organizations with a focus on long-term issues, including think tanks, universities, and other groups that shape long-term public policy.
- Provide oral and written testimony to Congress and to the executive branch on retirement policy issues.
- Guide the volunteer leadership in making clear, concise, and effective public statements and producing other work products that advance the Academy’s goals. Must be able to work closely with committee volunteers to facilitate outcomes, often on multiple/simultaneous efforts. In many cases, act as the primary drafter of these statements.
- Brief news media; engage in on-the-record interviews with both print and electronic media on a wide variety of retirement income security topics.
- Make public presentations on topics illuminating the Academy’s short- and long-term goals to a range of internal and external audiences.
- Build and maintain relationships with the Academy’s internal audiences (members and staff).
- Build and maintain relationships with key congressional and administration staff, stakeholders, and key media members.
Qualifications
The Senior Pension Fellow will:
- Be a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and an enrolled actuary (or recent EA).
- Demonstrate superior knowledge and understanding of and have education and experience in all aspects of pension/retirement security policy, including private plans, public plans, and pension funding and accounting rules. Knowledge of Social Security, the PBGC, retirement needs and risks, financial economics, retiree health plans, multi-employer plans, and employee stock options is also important.
- Display a command of, or the propensity to develop a command of, the congressional legislative process and federal regulatory processes related to the laws and rules governing pension plans.
- Have superior written and oral communication skills.
