Actuaries’ Senior Health Fellow Available to Discuss Outcome of King v. Burwell Supreme Court Case
WASHINGTON – American Academy of Actuaries Senior Health Fellow Cori Uccello will be available for media interviews to provide an objective, actuarial perspective on the outcome of the highly anticipated Supreme Court decision in King v. Burwell.
A May 2015 issue brief authored by the Academy’s Health Practice Council (HPC) highlighted how a ruling eliminating federal premium subsidies in states participating in the federally facilitated marketplace (FFM) could cause a dramatic decline in enrollment in the individual market among those previously eligible for premium assistance. The resulting adverse selection would lead to an increase in average health costs and premiums. In its issue brief, the HPC analyzed the implications of some of the approaches that have been offered in anticipation of the court striking down the subsidies, including proposals to provide transitional coverage to those who might lose premium assistance.
Uccello can discuss these implications and the important principles that proposed changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) should follow to help ensure the viability of the health care market.
To set up an interview with Uccello, contact Assistant Director of Communications, Public Affairs, David Mendes at mendes@actuary.org or 202.384.2075.
