The Academy Board of Directors adopted at its October 28, 2011, meeting the policy that all Academy members who are members of any Academy board, committee, subcommittee, work group, task force, etc. (“committee”) annually must comply and attest to their compliance with the continuing education (CE) requirements of the U.S. Qualification Standards to serve as members of such committee.
As an Academy member serving on a committee, you will be asked to acknowledge your compliance with this policy on the annual Conflict of Interest acknowledgments sent to volunteers during the first quarter of each year. In recommending this policy to the Academy Board of Directors, the Council on Professionalism stated that it believes that Academy work products issued to the public will have more credibility if all of the authors of that product are in compliance with CE requirements, and such authors are shown as “compliant” in their respective directories. The Council also stated that it believes that requiring volunteers to comply with CE requirements further illustrates the Academy’s commitment to its mission of promoting high professionalism standards.
It is expected that each volunteer on a committee will have completed 30 hours of CE (including 6 from organized activities and 3 from professionalism topics) in the year prior to the acknowledgement or as otherwise provided in the U.S. Qualification Standards (see http://www.actuary.org/qualstandards/qual.pdf).
Given that 2012 will be the first year requiring compliance, volunteers will have until March 31, 2012, to attest to compliance. Please note that, as described in Section 2.2.7 of the U.S. Qualification Standards, many volunteers may earn CE credits, including organized activity credits, by virtue of serving on a committee. Also note that committee chairpersons have the discretion to allow individuals to continue to be involved on a committee without being a member of that committee by deeming that person an “interested party.”
