Alfred Bingham Receives Jarvis Farley Service Award From the American Academy of Actuaries
WASHINGTON—American Academy of Actuaries President Lisa Slotznick, MAAA, FCAS, presented Alfred Bingham, MAAA, FSA, with the Jarvis Farley Service Award at the Academy’s “Envision Tomorrow” annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 16.
Named after Academy charter member and accomplished volunteer Jarvis Farley, the award is presented annually to an actuary whose volunteer efforts on behalf of the Academy have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession.
“Through more than 25 years of dedicated volunteer service to the Academy in more than 35 different roles, Al’s prolific contributions have had a profound impact on his colleagues and public policy stakeholders, and on our profession,” Slotznick said at the award ceremony. “Al’s service accomplishments over more than a quarter-century are innumerable, but many have been in the areas of health policy and professionalism.” Slotznick highlighted Bingham’s standout roles as vice president of health in leading the Academy’s efforts to communicate the unbiased, essential actuarial perspective in the lead-up to the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010; and later, as vice president of professionalism, in strengthening actuarial professional standards.
“The work we do—that you do—in the Academy, on projects large and small, matters,” Bingham said in accepting the award. “It is important and it is impactful. It makes a difference. You make a difference. I encourage all Academy volunteers to keep at their rewarding work, and those who are thinking about joining the ranks, to take the plunge, as I did years ago.”
