Opening General Session on Longevity Increases One of the great stories of the last 100 years—impacting countless lives and with vast implications for assuring financial security--is increased life expectancy. The Academy welcomes accomplished author and speaker Steven Johnson, described by the New York Times as a “deep thinker and a gifted storyteller,” to recount the innovations and changes behind humanity’s remarkable feat of doubling life expectancy and what lies ahead. Johnson will lead the audience on a fascinating journey, elaborating on his most recent book, Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer, sharing insights on the mechanics of this transformative change, as well as remaining challenges such as gaps in life expectancy, and the role of innovation in further extending longevity.

General Session Data Analytics: New and Emerging Considerations for Actuaries in the Age of Big Data As new data sources, methods, and applications proliferate and the vast universe of Big Data grows ever bigger and less “traditional” by the day, join leading Academy volunteers for a discussion of the emerging professionalism and regulatory considerations these changes raise for actuaries’ data analytics work. This discussion will highlight key developments such as how Big Data and artificial intelligence (AI) are impacting data analytics in the insurance space, and how regulators are newly scrutinizing data, algorithms, models, and predictive modeling. This discussion will also put a valuable professionalism lens on data analytics practices in the context of actuarial standards of practice, including where data and models have been produced by non-actuaries who are not familiar with our profession’s standards or insurance regulatory requirements.
