RSVP for Next Week’s Academy Leadership Transition

The Annual Meeting of the Academy, a virtual event next week, will feature the presidential and leadership transition. Outgoing President Lisa Slotznick and incoming President Darrell Knapp will deliver remarks, and Executive Director Bill Michalisin will give an update on the Academy’s activities this year. It will also recognize incoming and outgoing Academy Board members. The virtual meeting, for Academy members only, is next Wednesday, Nov. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. EST. RSVP today.

Webinar to Focus on Ethics in Health

Next week’s professionalism webinar, Ethical Dilemmas Facing Health Actuaries: Insights and Case Studies, will feature Academy professionalism leaders from the health practice area who will discuss potentially challenging ethical situations that health actuaries may face in their work. It will be on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from noon to 1:15 p.m. EST. Register today.

TODAY—Room Block Closing for December’s P/C Loss Reserve Opinions Seminar

The hotel room block closes today, Nov. 8, for next month’s Seminar on Effective P/C Loss Reserve Opinions in New Orleans. Called by one attendee “a great distillation of changing requirements and rules, as well as a good pooling of experience,” the seminar is designed for property/casualty actuaries who prepare NAIC statements of actuarial opinion. NAWA 2024 Virtual Meeting Set for Nov. 21

The 2024 Network of Actuarial Women and Allies (NAWA) annual meeting will be held virtually on Thursday, Nov. 21, from noon to 4 p.m. EST. It will include four sessions, including a keynote session with Laura Hay on “Building Confidence, Taking Risks and Conquering Imposter Syndrome,” and a leadership and career advancement panel. The virtual event will be followed by a Happy Hour at the 196 Club in Hartford, Conn., from 4 to 7 p.m. EST. Register today.

Academy Holds Successful LHQ Seminar

The Academy held the 2024 Life and Health Qualifications Seminar Monday through Thursday in Arlington, Va. The annual LHQ Seminar for life and health actuaries offers basic education or relevant continuing education CE necessary to qualify to issue statements of actuarial opinion (SAOs) for NAIC annual statements. Incoming Academy President Darrell Knapp was chairperson of the LHQ Seminar committee.

Academy Presents at CAS Annual Meeting


The Academy luncheon at CAS

Academy volunteers and staff presented at the Casualty Actuarial Society’s (CAS) annual meeting in Phoenix. The Academy hosted a luncheon for newly credentialed fellows and associates, and President Lisa Slotznick led a session on “Self-Regulation and the Code,” and a roundtable on “2024 Mega Issues—Climate, Cyber, AI—and Policymaker Interactions.” Senior Casualty Fellow Rich Gibson, incoming Casualty Vice President Susan Kent, and New Mexico Office of the Superintendent of Insurance Chief Actuary Christian Myers presented on “P&C Regulatory and Legislative Environment.”

Academy to Present at NAIC Fall Meeting

Volunteers and staff will be attending and presenting at the NAIC Fall National Meeting in Denver beginning late next week. The Casualty Practice Council, Health Practice Council, and Life Practice Council will present on recent and upcoming Academy activities to the NAIC actuarial task forces, senior Academy volunteer leadership will provide updates and respond to public comments on the drafted knowledge statements for the Life Actuarial (A) Task Force (LATF) and Health Actuarial (B) Task Force (HATF), and President-Elect Darrell Knapp, Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) member and Past President Shawna Ackerman, and Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) Chairperson Kevin Dyke will provide professionalism updates to LATF, HATF, and the Casualty Actuarial and Statistical (C) Task Force. Senior Casualty Fellow Rich Gibson will present the recent issue brief, Insurance Fraud: Impacts on Premiums, Claim Costs, and the Public, to NAIC’s Antifraud (D) Task Force, and Director of Research Steve Jackson will share an update on the title insurance research project with the Title Insurance (C) Task Force. Stay tuned for a post-NAIC webinar, coming in early December.

  • The CPC submitted comments to the ASB on the exposure draft of Actuarial Standard of Practice (ASOP) No. 30, Profit Margins and Contingency Provisions in Property/Casualty Risk Transfer and Risk Retention.

Academy’s Fall Professionalism Outreach to Actuarial Employers, Clubs in Full Swing

A busy fall schedule of professionalism outreach to actuarial clubs and employers strategically supporting the profession’s self-regulation included a virtual presentation to Centene on Wednesday by ABCD Professionalism Director Ed Lee, who gave an overview of the ABCD, including how to submit requests for guidance. Past President Tom Campbell gave an in-person presentation to the Actuaries’ Club of Boston on Thursday, including an overview of the professionalism infrastructure and a look at the Academy’s new membership requirements effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Contingencies Covers the Importance of Self-Regulation, Future Leaders & More

The November/December Contingencies focuses on key areas for the profession—including the importance of self-regulation and the emerging area of actuarial professionalism and generative AI. Other articles shine a spotlight on this year’s Rising Actuary Award recipients, explore emerging risks as viewed by CROs, and examine Medicaid capitation rates. Lisa Slotznick’s final President’s Message explores how actuaries specialize in putting a number on something that others may be uncomfortable quantifying.
