Early Registration Ends This Month for LHQ Seminar—Register Early & Save $200

Register now and get an early-bird discount to this year’s Life and Health Qualifications Seminar, set for November just outside of Washington, D.C. Topics include an introduction to principle-based reserves and risk-based capital; health claim reserves and premium deficiency reserves; life insurance reserves—an overview and formulaic reserves; and professionalism. Earn up to 27 hours of CE, including professionalism hours. Space is limited for the LHQ Seminar, which will be held Nov. 4–7 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Va. Next Week—Webinar to Examine NAIC GOES Project

Join the Academy for next week’s life webinar, which will offer an update on the NAIC Generator of Economic Scenarios (GOES) Project, the NAIC’s transition from the Academy’s Interest Rate Generator (AIRG) to a new economic scenario generator. Speakers will present the latest on the project, highlight recent updates, and discuss remaining challenges. It will be held next Wednesday, July 24—register today.

Part-Two FIO/NSF Webinar Covers Cyber, Terrorism Issues

The Academy hosted a free webinar Tuesday, part two of a series with the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) and National Science Foundation (NSF) on cyber risk, terrorism, and underwriting issues. Moderators Committee on Cyber Risk Chairperson Wanchin Chou, FIO Director Steven Seitz, and FIO Senior Insurance Regulatory Policy Analyst Chanda Brady led a panel of experts who discussed market challenges and potential areas for research and improvement in modeling and underwriting. Health Webinar Examines 2025 Premium Drivers

Members of the Individual and Small Group Markets Committee presented in Thursday’s webinar, Drivers of 2025 Health Insurance Premium Changes. Chairperson Jason Karcher moderated the discussion, which looked at factors influencing the pricing of health insurance premiums next year, including the resumption of Medicaid eligibility. Actuarial Research Conference Kicks Off

Academy Research Award Recipient to Be Announced Friday Evening

The 2024 Actuarial Research Conference—of which the Academy is a major sponsor—is underway, with several presentations by Academy representatives. Academy President Lisa Slotznick welcomed participants to the conference, being held Thursday through Saturday at Middle Tennessee State University.

Senior Director of Professionalism Brian Jackson will present Friday afternoon on professionalism issues; Economic Scenario Generator Subcommittee Chairperson Hal Pedersen gave a plenary talk Friday morning on financial economics, introduced by Director of Research Steve Jackson, who also moderated a panel on behavioral economics.

  • Award for Research—The Academy will also unveil this year’s recipient of the Award for Research, who will be offered the opportunity to present their research at Envision Tomorrow, the Academy’s annual meeting in October.

Actuarially Sound Spotlights AI Issues

The latest Actuarially Sound blog post, from Risk Management and Financial Reporting Analyst Will Behnke, covers how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of underwriting, fraud detection, and risk management.
