Academy Closed Monday for Memorial Day

The Academy’s office will be closed Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. The Academy recognizes U.S. military personnel who have died while serving our country, protecting the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. We hope all will join in observing their sacrifice on this holiday weekend.

Reminder—Nominations Due for Board Directors, Member Awards

A reminder that nominations for Academy member-selected directors, who will serve three-year terms on the Academy’s Board of Directors, are due next Wednesday, May 31—for more, please visit the Nominations Page.

And don’t forget to nominate a deserving colleague for Academy service awards—and the Rising Actuary Awards—presented annually to members in recognition of their commitment to the profession. Nominations are due June 15—more information can be found here.

CPC, RMFRC Wrap Up Hill Visits

The Casualty Practice Council (CPC) and the Risk Management and Financial Reporting Council (RMFRC) wrapped up their joint “Hill visits”—meeting virtually with federal lawmakers and policymakers on casualty and risk-related issues—with the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Congressional Research Service, and Federal Emergency Management Agency. ASB Approves ERM ASOP Exposure Draft

The Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) approved an exposure draft of a new actuarial standard of practice (ASOP) on enterprise risk management (ERM) to replace ASOP Nos. 46 and 47. The proposed ASOP, Enterprise Risk Management, provides guidance to actuaries when performing actuarial services with respect to developing, maintaining, or reviewing all or part of an ERM framework. The comment deadline is Sept. 15—more information and how to submit comments can be found in the exposure draft.

Professionalism Outreach—ASB Spotlight

ASB Casualty Committee member Norman Niami delivered the professionalism session at the Casualty Actuaries of the Mid-Atlantic Region’s meeting near Philadelphia on Tuesday. In “ASOPs: Crucial Tools in the Casualty Actuary’s Toolkit,” Niami discussed the ASB’s role and authority, outlined the standard-setting process and key ASOP concepts, and provided updates on both casualty and cross-practice ASOPs. Health Webinar to Cover Actuarial Guideline 44

The Group Life Waiver Valuation Table Work Group is joining the Society of Actuaries Research Institute (SOARI) on an SOA-hosted webinar June 9 to discuss tables and changes to Actuarial Guideline LXIV (AG 44) that were submitted to the NAIC last year and adopted at the NAIC Fall National Meeting in December.  Register here.

Recently Released

The Spring HealthCheck covers the Academy’s and Health Practice Council’s (HPC) work surrounding the 2023 Medicare Trustees Report, including an issue brief, an Essential Elements paper, and a webinar that featured the chief actuary of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Also in the issue, the HPC’s annual “Hill visits,” the Health Equity Committee is seeking volunteers, and recent legislative and regulatory activity. The Academy also debuted “Highlights From HealthCheck,” a short video recapping the issue.
