Academy Hosts P/C Loss Reserve Opinions Seminar

The Academy hosted the annual Seminar on Effective P/C Loss Reserve Opinions Monday and Tuesday in Phoenix. Attendees gained significant hours of continuing education (professionalism, bias under the revised U.S. Qualification Standards, etc.), heard comments throughout from a state regulator who volunteers on the faculty—Sue Gozzo Andrews—and had discussion opportunities for both experienced opinion writers and those new to it, from a faculty with decades of experience. Dawn Fowle was seminar faculty chairperson and Aaron Hillebrandt was vice chairperson.

Next Week—‘Tales From the Dark Side’ Professionalism Webinar

Join the Academy next week for the latest iteration of the popular “Tales from the Dark Side” professionalism webinar series, which examines examples of ethical problems based on cases and requests for guidance that have been brought before the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD). Presenting ABCD members will use case studies to discuss professionalism aspects that actuaries should consider to remain on the right side of the Code of Professional Conduct. Core ethics Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries (JBEA) continuing professional education credit (CPE), and professionalism continuing education (CE) credit are available. The webinar is Friday, Dec. 16, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. Register now.

Academy Sends Letter to Congressional Leadership on SECURE 2.0

With the closing days of the 117th Congress including ongoing consideration of expanding the 2019 SECURE Act, the Pension Practice Council’s Pension Committee and Retirement Policy and Design Evaluation Committee sent a letter to congressional leadership with supportive comments, and offered an actuarial perspective on specific provisions of House and Senate retirement-related legislation.

Health Affairs Publishes Academy Article on ACA Cost-Sharing Reductions

Three Health Practice Council (HPC) volunteers—Individual and Small Group Markets Committee Chairperson Joyce Bohl and Vice Chairperson Donna Novak, and Risk Sharing Subcommittee Chairperson Jason Karcher—along with Senior Health Fellow Cori Uccello co-authored an article published by Health Affairs on Wednesday. The article—“Paying For ACA Cost-Sharing Reductions: Are Premiums Too Low Or Too High?”—follows a September comment letter to the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight and further contributes to the public policy dialogue on the calculation of premium loads for Affordable Care Act (ACA) cost-sharing reductions (CSRs). The three volunteer authors also gave a presentation to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) on the topic last month.

Pension Webinar Looks at Capital Market Outlook

The Pension Practice Council hosted the “Capital Market Outlook—What to Expect After 2022’s Roller-Coaster Ride” webinar on Tuesday. Evan Inglis and Jerry Mingione presented, and Pension Committee member Maria Moliterno moderated. Presenters discussed the inflation spike that followed historically low interest rates and historically high capital market pricing, and whether this is the “new normal.” They also gave a refresher on Federal Reserve and monetary policy, and the role and demographic effects and implications. Save the Date—P/C Public Policy Webinar Set for Dec. 20

Save the date for the upcoming webinar, “P/C Public Policy Update—Winter 2022.” Topics will include an overview and update on P/C risk-based capital, medical marijuana in workers’ compensation, and methods to identify bias. New Casualty Vice President Amy Angell will moderate. The webinar is set for Tuesday, Dec. 20, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST. Registration will open soon.

P/C Loss Reserve Law Manual Available for Preorder

Academy Sponsoring Diversity Scholarships for Drake Symposium

Academy members are encouraged to share with actuarial students that the 2023 Drake Symposium on Insurance, which focuses on insurance and actuarial science, is offering six Academy-sponsored diversity scholarships. Current university students of under-represented backgrounds interested in the actuarial profession are encouraged to apply. Recipients must be available to travel to Des Moines, Iowa, on April 14–15, 2023. The deadline to apply is Feb. 17. For more information and to apply, click here.

Professionalism Outreach

Committee on Qualifications member Chad Wischmeyer gave a virtual presentation on the 2022 U.S. qualification standards to the Southwest Actuarial Forum on Wednesday. The presentation provided an overview of the qualification changes that took effect this year, including the new annual bias continuing education requirement.
