Senior Casualty Fellow Gibson Speaks to National Audience on Hurricane Ian & Insurance
 Just days after Hurricane Ian struck Florida and South Carolina, Academy Senior Casualty Fellow Rich Gibson spoke live Monday with National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition,” which NPR calls “the most listened-to news radio program in the country.” Gibson directed his comments to helping listeners understand different insurance coverages that may respond to hurricane-related damage, and to pointing listeners affected by damage to helpful insurance resources. P/C Loss Reserve Opinions Seminar Offers Bias Credit
December’s Seminar on Effective P/C Loss Reserve Opinions—designed for actuaries who prepare, or assist with preparing, annual statements of actuarial opinion on P/C loss reserves—has updated a session on the use of reserve ranges, which will count toward the new continuing education requirement on bias topics under the U.S. Qualification Standards (USQS). A session on qualifications will focus on the recently revised USQS, and a new session will explore what to do when things go wrong in opinion writing. The Life Practice Council (LPC) will host “Economic Turmoil and Life Insurance—What’s an Actuary to Do? ” Presenters from the LPC’s Life Experience Committee will discuss inflation and related assumptions, as well as sources offering the latest information on economic variables. The webinar is set for Wednesday, Oct. 19, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EDT; register now. “The Application of ASU 2018-12 to the Accounting for Long-Duration Contracts Under US GAAP—Part 2” is the second installment of a three-part risk management and financial reporting webinar series. It will examine the Application of ASU 2018-12 to the Accounting for Long-Duration Contracts Under U.S. GAAP practice note, developed by the Financial Reporting Committee’s Long-Duration Contracts Work Group. This webinar is on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. EDT. Academy Volunteers Participate in Panel on Bias
Academy Board Member and Data Science and Analytics Committee Chairperson Dorothy Andrews, Casualty Vice President Lauren Cavanaugh, and Health Equity Committee Vice Chairperson Stacey Lampkin participated in a panel discussion Monday, “Bias Across Our Industries,” as part of the Network of Actuarial Women and Allies annual meeting.
Professionalism Outreach
Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD) member Al Beer presented virtually on “What Every Actuary Should Know About Professionalism!” at the 2022 Markel Actuarial Summit on Thursday. Beer emphasized the opportunities available to actuaries to access valuable guidance and advice from experienced professionals within the profession through the ABCD and discussed the importance of and the interrelationships among the ABCD, the Code of Professional Conduct, actuarial standards of practice (ASOPs), and the recently revised USQS.
