American Academy of Actuaries 2011 Summer Summit: Enterprise Risk Management
July 11, 2011
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Washington, DC |
|
The American Academy of Actuaries 2011 Summer Summit, the third such annual meeting for Academy leaders, will serve as an integral component of the Academy’s planning and development of major strategic goals. As with the past two summits, leading actuaries in every practice area will tackle specific issues employing cross-practice area strategies to work through this year’s aggressive agenda.
This year’s summit will use the conceptual approach and discipline of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) to complete a comprehensive assessment of risks and opportunities relating to the Academy’s long-term mission, business goals, strategies, and operations.
Successful corporations have learned to use and apply ERM as a value-added corporate function that identifies and leads not only to productive conversations and decisions on risk mitigation, but also to enhanced focus on and awareness of value-generating activities. Session leaders at the Summit will include knowledgeable ERM practitioners who will facilitate as Summit attendees translate our individual professional and business experience into leading indicators and risk measures to better advance the Academy’s objectives to provide public policy support, improve professionalism, and safeguard the integrity and reputation of the actuarial profession.
Meeting Objectives
The meeting is structured to achieve the following outcomes:
- Provide input to an Academy-appointed Risk Management Task Force which is identifying risks and reviewing risk management actions to ensure continued Academy effectiveness. The members of the Task Force will include input from this forum in their expected fall recommendations to the Academy’s Board.
- Begin to define the process that the Academy can use going forward so that the staff, volunteers and board can all work together to accomplish the Academy’s goals while managing the risks of the enterprise to our agreed upon risk tolerances.
- Further our professional capacity to work and speak to public policy issues as risk experts in a more generalized (and shared) language.
