Academy Capitol Forum Lunchtime Guest Webinar Series

  • Diagnosing Which Health Treatments Improve Outcomes: A PCORI Overview and How to Get Involved: Gregory Martin, the Deputy Director of Stakeholder Engagement at the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, kicked off the Academy’s new webinar series—the Academy Capitol Forum—by discussing the role and function of PCORI and how actuaries can be involved in improving the nation’s health treatment outcomes. Public Policy Activities

  • The Financial Regulatory Reform Task Force submitted comments to the Financial Stability Board on its paper discussing the application of key attributes of an effective resolution regime to non-bank financial institutions.
  • The Health Solvency Work Group submitted responses to questions from the NAIC’s Health Risk-Based Capital Working Group regarding HSWG’s model that examines expenses within the context of business risk concentration risk.

Academy in the News

  • Motley Fool’s director of investment planning cited the Academy in a Fool.com column examining the pros and cons of eliminating the limit on Social Security’s taxable wage base.
  • The Academy’s research into the implications of states’ decisions about expanding Medicaid coverage was cited in a story in the Raleigh, N.C.-based News & Observer.

  • Deep Dive into NAIC Health Annual Statement’s New Exhibit 3A on Health Care Receivables: Academy members F. Kevin Russell (MAAA, FSA) and Susan L. Mateja (MAAA, FSA) dove into the Exhibit 3A instructions, which are new for the 2013 NAIC Health Annual Statement. They also gave an overview of the health care receivables, purpose of the new exhibit, and shared examples with cross references to Exhibit 3 and Underwriting & Investment Exhibit Part 2B.
