The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) protects the retirement incomes for over 44 million Americans in over 26,000 private-sector benefit pension plans. In 2012, PBGC paid for the monthly retirement benefits for 887,000 retirees in 4,500 single and multiemployer pension plans.

Christopher Bone
, FSA, EA, MAAA; Director of the Policy, Research and Analysis Department (PRAD), Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation
Christopher M. Bone is the Director of the Policy Research and Analysis Department (PRAD). He joined PBGC in August, 2013. Before coming to PBGC, he was an independent consulting actuary specializing in employee benefits and retirement programs. Previously for six years he served as Executive Vice President and US Retirement Practice Leader of Aon Consulting, US and over fourteen years as Chief Actuary of it and its predecessor companies. His professional background includes consulting work for private and public sector employers, public sector employee groups, state legislative committees and federal regulators. He has served on a number of boards, including several focused on retirement issues (the Society of Actuaries’ Board of Governors, the Employee Benefit Research Institute, and the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council). Mr. Bone is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA, and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. An Alumni Distinguished Scholar, he graduated from the Honors College, Michigan State University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics.
Neela K. Ranade, FSA, EA, MAAA; Chief Negotiating Actuary, Corporate Finance and Restructuring Department, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation
Neela K. Ranade has been Chief Negotiating Actuary in the Office of Negotiations and Restructuring at PBGC since 2006. She has led PBGC’s actuarial team in successful early warning and bankruptcy cases such as Chrysler Corporation, St. Gobain, and American Airlines. Ms. Ranade worked as a Consulting Actuary for 18 years at Actuarial Sciences Associates, a company that was acquired by Aon Consulting. She has provided expert advice on pension and health insurance matters to large private and public sector clients. Her last position at Actuarial Sciences Associates was Vice President and Managing Actuary. Immediately prior to joining PBGC, Ms Ranade worked for two years as Chief Actuary at Congressional Research Service. She has published several articles in benefit journals, and spoken at numerous conferences. Ms. Ranade has served on the Board of the United Way of Somerset County, New Jersey and several committees of the Society of Actuaries and Academy of Actuaries. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary, and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She holds a M.A. in Mathematics from Temple University and a M.Sc. in Mathematics from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.

Don Fuerst, MAAA, FSA, FCA, EA; Senior Pension Fellow, American Academy of Actuaries
Donald Fuerst is the American Academy of Actuaries’ Senior Pension Fellow. In this role, he is the actuarial profession’s chief policy liaison on pension, Social Security, and other retirement issues. He promotes the formulation of sound retirement policy by providing nonpartisan technical assistance to legislators and regulators.
Before joining the Academy, Don was a Senior Partner and retirement consultant in Mercer’s Denver office where he advised corporate clients for more than 30 years on design, funding and compliance issues related to retirement programs.
Don is a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Conference of Actuaries, and an Enrolled Actuary.
